6F40.10 - Rayleigh scattering
- Description
This demonstration showcases the principles of electrostatic induction by generating high-voltage sparks and charges, illustrating concepts of electrical potential and charge separation.
Be cautious when operating the generator, as the high voltage produced can present a risk of electric shock.
- Equipment
- Wimhurst generator
- How to assemble and operate
- 1. To operate a Wimshurst generator, first, ensure the device is properly assembled (see the pdf of the manual below) and the disks are clean and free from any debris.
- 2. Next, turn the handle in a steady, clockwise motion to rotate the disks [follow the arrow]. This action generates an electrostatic charge on the disks, which is transferred to the Leyden jars located on either side of the disks through metal brushes. As the charge accumulates, the potential difference between the Leyden jars increases, creating sparks across the terminals.
